25. Class Options

"Remember what we agreed on. Don’t choose a class immediately. Consult with us first," Mariah insisted for the nth time, gripping both of Peter’s shoulders.
"He understands, Mariah. You can let him go now," Joseph said, setting down his empty glass of milk.
She sighed, finally releasing her son, and stepped back to take her seat. "Here, have some more since you like it so much," she said affectionately, handing Peter another slice of watermelon.
She wasn’t wrong, he loved them. How could he not? They tasted far better than the mass-produced ones laced with pesticides.
"Are you going again today?" Mariah asked her husband as he began strapping on his armour. He didn’t even finish his breakfast yet.
"I have to. Things are getting troublesome, more beasts are entering the outskirts every day, shifting territories." Joseph picked up his trusty sword, giving her a helpless smile.
"Are you sure it’s nothing serious?" Mariah asked, a concerned look in her stare. Cities didn’t have issues like this. One more reason to move once Peter grew up a bit. Staying here would only limit his growth.
"It’s hard to say without knowing the cause, but if I had to guess, some beast probably advanced in grade and is expanding its territory. That likely triggered a chain reaction, forcing weaker monsters to claim the lands of even weaker ones."
"Don’t worry too much, though. I’ll be fine. We’ll all be fine," Joseph reassured them both.
"I know… It’s just that I worry." Mariah clasped his hand, pressing a kiss to it. "This isn’t a common occurrence, and I don’t trust surprises."
"I promise to be extra careful," he said with a smile before leaning down to kiss her deeply.
Peter coughed when the hug lingered a little too long, and their hands started to roam. At least they had the decency to look embarrassed.
Joseph left the house, and soon, Peter returned to his room.
Sitting on the corner of his bed, he debated what to do. Sleeping right after dinner wasn’t healthy, so to pass the time, he picked up a book.
It was one of the few they had in the house. Books were expensive, and only a handful of families in the village owned them. He had already read this one a couple of times, but with nothing better to do, he started again.
Peter planned to keep his promise to his parents and wouldn’t select a class without them. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t check out his options the moment they became available at midnight.
Ten minutes later, Peter was already bored. With a sigh, he set the book aside. Usually, he would be working on a skill in his IDE at this time, but tonight, he decided against it. Special days deserve breaks from work.
Maybe he could train. With that thought, he settled into meditation, focusing on mana manipulation until midnight after giving a glance at his Status Screen, noting the recent advancements in his Skills from adding hunting and herb gathering to his routine.

Inspect and defensive skills received the most growth.

Peter was deeply in meditation when midnight passed, and his System became active with messages.

System...

You have turned ten years of age!
Class selection has been made available.
Note! You can choose not to select a class right now if you are not satisfied with the available options.
Note! In such a scenario, you will be provided with a placeholder class until you select a class.
Note! You must select a class before you turn 13 years of age!
Important Note! In case of failure, you will automatically be assigned a class by the System based on what it finds most compatible with you.
The System wishes you a happy selection. Happy Birthday!

Peter requested it to display the available options, and the System flashed briefly with a pale blue light. The earlier messages disappeared, replaced by new ones.

Rare:

That's a lot of options... I thought the System didn’t allow first advancements to choose above the Unusual grade!
Peter stared at the long list of choices. Even Sasha only had two Uncommon options and five in the Common grade. For now, he decided to go through the descriptions of each class.

Swordsman
A disciplined warrior who is training in the art of the blade. A Swordsman focuses on precision, speed, and technique, mastering different sword styles and stances. While not skilled in magical arts, most Swordsmen use mana in their strikes, improving their lethality. They gain skills related to swordsmanship, agility, and endurance more easily.

Fighter

A Fighter is a brawler who relies on brute strength and instinct rather than techniques. Fighters excel in close-quarters combat, using fists, kicks, and whatever weapons they can wield effectively. They have high endurance and natural resilience, making them durable warriors. Their path often leads to martial arts mastery or berserker-like power.

Wanderer
A free-spirited traveller who lives on exploration and is very adaptable. Wanderers tend to develop survival skills, combat prowess, and keen observation to navigate different terrains. They have a natural resistance to fatigue and the ability to learn diverse skills, making them excellent scouts or adventurers in the unknown.

Scribe
A Scribe is a seeker of knowledge, fully devoted to recording history, analysing magic, and deciphering hidden truths. Scribes have a heightened memory, increased comprehension, and analytical thinking. Some scribes could use mana to inscribe magical scripts, runes, or enchantments, while others could only focus on or willingly focus purely on understanding ancient texts and lost knowledge.

Brawler
A Brawler is a combatant who fights with raw physical prowess and will rather than refined technique. Brawlers excel in chaotic melee fights, using unpredictable movements, powerful strikes, and sheer endurance to overpower foes. They often develop physical ironclad defences and incredible stamina, making them formidable opponents in close combat but weak against magical means.

Initiate Summoner
An Initiate Summoner is a beginner in the art of summoning, capable of bringing forth minor creatures or familiars to assist in battle or daily life. Their ability to form contracts with summoned beings depends on their mana reserves and affinity. With training and a vast amount of caution, an Initiate Summoner can grow into a powerful conjurer if they are lucky.

Apprentice Mage
An Apprentice Mage student of magic who has begun their journey into the arcane arts. Apprentice Mages tend to only learn basic spells, develop mana control, and experiment with different elemental or theoretical magic due to a lack of ability. They are often weak in direct combat but make up for it with strategic planned spell use and long-term potential.

Scholar
A devoted academic, specializing in knowledge, research, and magical theory. Scholars gain enhanced perception, memory, and deduction skills, allowing them to uncover hidden information and analyse magical or historical mysteries. Some scholars focus on practical applications, while others prefer theoretical mastery over complex systems.

Guardian
A protector specializing in defence, resilience, and safeguarding allies. Guardians use their sturdy constitution and defensive techniques to shield others from harm. Some excel in wielding shields and Armor, while others manifest magical wards and barriers to block incoming attacks, making them invaluable in battle.

Shepherd
A guardian of animals and a guide to lost souls. Shepherds develop an innate connection with beasts, allowing them to tame, communicate, and lead them effectively. Some Shepherds gain protective or healing abilities, using their calm presence to soothe both animals and people alike.

Hunter
A master of tracking, stealth, and ranged combat, skilled in taking down prey with precision. Hunters learn to read terrain, identify weaknesses, and set traps for both animals and enemies. Many Hunters develop an instinctual sixth sense for danger, making them formidable scouts or assassins.

Common classes were only useful for comparison, as Peter had no intention of selecting any of them. Still, he hadn’t received as many options as he had expected. Even though he had only ever used a sword, his Weapons Mastery skill ensured that he could become equally proficient with any weapon after some practice.
He had assumed this would grant him access to classes related to other weapons as well, but it seemed the System disagreed.
Reading through the descriptions, it became clear why he had received certain options. Mana Sense likely contributed to the Hunter class, while his defensive skills opened up the Guardian path. Scholar and Scribe were probably a result of his IDE, Inspect, and the titles he had earned.
Peter decided not to dwell on the common-grade classes any longer and shifted his focus to the uncommon options.

Arcane Savant
A genius in the study and application of magic, capable of deep insights into arcane theory. Arcane Savants can manipulate mana with greater precision than normal mages, discovering new spell combinations, refining existing techniques, and even crafting original spells. Their potential is nearly limitless.

Tactician
A strategic mastermind skilled in commanding troops, analysing battlefields, and making swift decisions. Tacticians excel in leadership roles, gaining abilities that enhance coordination, boost allies' combat effectiveness, and even predict enemy movements. Their intelligence and charisma make them influential figures in war and diplomacy.

Spell blade
A warrior who seamlessly blends swordsmanship with magic, enhancing their attacks with elemental energy, mana-infused strikes, or defensive wards. Spell blades excel in fast-paced combat, using both physical prowess and magical techniques to overwhelm opponents, making them versatile fighters on the battlefield.

Fate-bound Wanderer
A traveller blessed (or cursed) by fate itself, moving through life guided by unseen forces. They possess a natural affinity for luck-based abilities, uncanny intuition, and an ability to escape impossible situations. Fate-bound Wanderers often find themselves at crossroads of destiny, influencing events beyond their understanding.

Battle Scholar
A fusion of intellect and combat prowess, Battle Scholars analyse techniques in real-time, adapting to opponents’ weaknesses mid-fight. They often use tactical thinking, martial knowledge, and keen observation to turn battles in their favour. Many develop a unique blend of book smarts and battlefield instincts.

Weapons Scholar
A specialist who studies the principles and techniques behind all forms of weaponry. Weapons Scholars can wield a variety of arms with near-instant mastery, learning new styles quickly. Their keen analytical mind allows them to break down enemy techniques and develop countermeasures efficiently.

Peter decided to ignore the classes he was already familiar with, such as his father’s. Arcane Savant stood out as the first purely magic-based class. He had likely unlocked Tactician and Fate-Bound Wanderer due to his luck and charisma stats.
Now, he needed to decide which classes he could openly discuss with his parents. He noticed that both common and uncommon classes leaned toward specialisation… some heavily, others lightly.
Turning his attention to Unusual grade classes, he recalled that, according to common knowledge, it was the highest tier one could normally attain during their first advancement. However, that assumption wasn’t entirely true, as he had Rare grade options available as well.

Skill Forger
A creator of abilities, capable of modifying, evolving, or even crafting brand-new skills. Skill Forgers possess deep insight into the nature of skills, allowing them to refine techniques beyond normal limits. Their growth potential is nearly limitless, as they are not bound by conventional skill learning.

This was the first class directly tied to the System, though strictly limited to skills. The fact that an entry-level skill creation class was already this high-grade spoke volumes about how difficult skill creation truly was.
Peter’s IDE made the process seem effortless in comparison, but in reality, proper skill crafting likely required mastery over magic, runic script, mana manipulation, and deep knowledge of the skill being created.
