Ch16- Memories
The void warped again, the white light peeling away to reveal a chaotic battlefield.
Thousands of soldiers filled the horizon—some fighting, many already fallen. At the front stood Hagan, his dark armor soaked in blood, his expression stone-cold. He leaned on a spear planted firmly into the blood-soaked earth.
Before him, an armless man, kneeling, surrounded by corpses. Despite the carnage, the dying man’s gaze remained calm—devoid of hatred, even in the face of death.
“Why help that woman?” the man asked weakly. “Do you not know what she is?”
Hagan’s eyes flared with fury. “Don’t you dare speak to me, you fiend,” he spat. “You may have fooled the other human-populated worlds you’ve slithered into, but that pathetic victim card won’t work on me.”
The man stared at Hagan, confused by his words. Slowly, he lowered his head.
“I see... So that’s what she told you…” he muttered. “You fool… you’ve doomed your people.”
Hagan yanked his spear from the ground, pointing it at the man, rage burning in his eyes.
“From where I stand, it looks like I saved my people—and countless others—from monsters like you. Repent for the human souls you’ve devoured.”
The man gave a weak shake of his head, the light in his eyes beginning to fade.
“Souls we’ve consumed? We were hunting that woman for the worlds she’s destroyed. When we finally built a force strong enough to stop her… your people slaughtered us.”
His voice wavered, but his words hit like thunder.
“Look around you, Supreme Ruler. For monsters accused of eating souls—why are all your deceased bodies still intact? And ask yourself this—where is #######’s army? The one that stood beside you just moments ago?”
Hagan’s gaze swept across the battlefield. His fallen soldiers—intact. Not a single body mutilated. No signs of soul devouring.
More importantly, #######'s forces—gone. Not a trace left behind.
A cold chill ran down his spine. Beads of sweat formed on his brow.
“What… what’s going on?”
The dying soldier looked at Hagan one last time, eyes half-lidded with sorrow.
“You fool… You’ve doomed us all.”
Thud.
His body collapsed, lifeless.
Hagan stood frozen, staring at the corpse, his hands trembling, the weight of it all crashing down.
“…What have I done…”
The world shattered around Khal, fading back into the endless white void.
Khal sat on the floor, processing everything he had just witnessed, his expression slowly twisting into anger.
Footsteps echoed in the void.
He lifted his head—and clenched his jaw at the sight.
Hagan.
He approached slowly, wearing a solemn expression, his eyes distant as he looked past Khal.
“It’s rage-inducing, isn’t it?” he said, voice heavy. “To place your trust in someone… only to realize they were the very evil you were trying to protect them from.”
“I’d show you more, but I’m afraid I’d only be putting you in even more danger.”
Khal stood, his gaze locked onto Hagan.
“You’re mistaken,” he said coldly. “I’m not angry because that woman fooled you… I’m angry that you let her fool you.”Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there.
He took a step forward.
“How can you call yourself a leader when you blindly believe the words of a stranger from another world and lead your people into an all-out war because of it?”
Khal’s voice sharpened.
“If you ask me… you’re pathetic.”
Hagan blinked, stunned—then unexpectedly burst into laughter.
Khal frowned, confused. Was this a joke to him?
But the laughter faded, and Hagan’s face sank into a look of sorrow.
“You’re right…” he said quietly. “So many have come here before you. Every one of them saw my memories, then told me what I wanted to hear… just to earn my inheritance.”
He looked directly at Khal now, sincerity plain on his face.
“But you… you’re the first to tell me what I needed to hear.”
His eyes fell to the floor.
“It was my fault…”
Khal’s anger faded, his expression cooling into his familiar icy calm.
“Listen, I didn’t come here to hear your sob story; i don’t even know why you pulled me in here. Since I’ve impressed you so much, why don’t you tell me where you’re buried so I can take what i can and get out of this tomb already?”
Khal placed his hands into his pockets. I’m burning enough time as it is.
Hagan’s tone shifted, becoming serious. “Ah yes, my treasures, I’ll soon get to that... But first, i should tell you the reason why i pulled you in here.”
Khal stayed silent, sensing the weight behind his words.
“I didn’t kill the others before you out of something as petty as hatred,” Hagan said. “I killed them because they saw her.”
Khal’s face hardened. His eyes narrowed. I didn’t even know he killed the others before me.
“The woman you glimpsed in my memories… she’s powerful beyond comprehension. So powerful that even in my own memories, I can’t recall her name or face. Also, If anyone beneath her in strength becomes aware of her existence—she’ll know. And she’ll come from them to keep her identity hidden.”
A bead of sweat slid down Khal’s cheek. His voice was low. “If that’s the risk… why show me? Are you trying to send her to lead her to my own world?” Khal clenched his fist, rage filling his gaze.
Hagan looked up and let out a tired breath. “Of course not; it’s because it doesn’t matter anymore. Sooner or later, she’ll find your world. And when she does, it’ll end like she ended mine.”
He extended his hand. “What I’m looking for is someone strong enough to fight. Strong-willed enough to carry my inheritance to try and stop what’s coming.”
Khal stayed silent for a moment, processing everything before he spoke. his voice steady. “Even if i agree to work with you, what exactly is your inheritance and what benefits could it bring me?”
In Hagan’s palm, a sphere of white light flickered into being, shifting into searing flame.
“What i can offer you is this.” He continued.
“You’re skilled. Despite your F-rank blessing, you beat Little White, and you’re quite adept at the spear.” He held Khal’s gaze. “You’re the perfect candidate to inherit my Divine-grade blessing—[Solar God’s Spearman].”
Khal’s eyes widened. His thoughts running rampant.
A divine grade blessing? The offer is quite tempting; even among all the experts around the world, only a few have a divine-grade blessing. Though the line between SS and divine seems small, the gap is simply incomprehensibly wide.
If i had a divine blessing, i could gain incredible power instantly… still… it’s simply nothing compared to what adapt could be.
Khal stared into Hagan’s eyes, shaking his head.
“No, i’ll be fine; just get me out of here. i’ll handle what’s to come on my own…
The void fell silent for a few moments, no words coming from either of them.
“Kid, i don’t think you understand; this is a divine grade blessing. the transfer will be harmless with zero risks. what do you mean, no?”
Khal let out a sigh, scratching his head.
“Look, alright, I just don’t want it. I'm good with what I have. I’m not saying I won’t protect and fight for my world; Trust me, I will. I’ll just do it with my own power.”
The void fell quiet once more, the flames in Hagan’s palm dissipating as he glared at Khal.
A bead of sweat ran down Khal’s forehead, the tenseness of the situation making him nervous.
Hopefully he doesn’t try to force me to switch my blessing, even with adapt, what can i do against someone that can kill me instantly?
He put his hand down, a slight grin creeping onto his face.
“As expected of the person I chose. Fine, I’ll respect your wishes. I don’t know why but something is telling me this is for the best.”
Khal let out a relieved sigh, grabbing his chest.
“But i still want to leave you with some good things; obviously you won’t be able to get any physical items here, so you will need to go to where my body lays, little white will lead you the way.” Hagan, his tone
“That little guy won’t do anything i say.” Khal replied.
“Don’t worry about that; once you’ve made it out of here alive, little white will know my decision.”
Hagan gave Khal a warm smile and a wave.
“You will be pulled in here once more when you find my body; maybe then we can have a long chat.”
Khal’s body began to slowly dissipate into white specks of light, his gaze unleaving hagan, burning with purpose.
I must prepare for what’s to to come… earth cannot share the same faith.
